FAQs: The Penny Is Retiring: What You Need to Know

spare change jar tipped over spilling out

The U.S. Treasury has officially stopped producing pennies after more than 230 years. While this marks the end of an era, your pennies are still legal tender, and Isabella Bank is here to help you navigate the change.

Why is the penny being phased out?

It costs about 3.7 cents to make a penny. Ending production saves millions in taxpayer dollars and reflects the shift toward digital payments.

Are pennies still legal tender?

Yes. You can still spend them or deposit them at Isabella Bank. There is no end date for accepting pennies.

What are the changes at Isabella Bank?

Starting December 15, 2025, we will no longer provide rolls or boxes of pennies. We will continue accepting pennies for deposits.

Will cash transactions change?

We may ask you to round your cash transactions to the nearest nickel, leaving the pennies in your account. Digital payments remain exact and unaffected.

What should I do with my pennies?

Bring them to your local Isabella Bank branch, and they will help you with your deposit. You can also spend them or save a few as keepsakes.

What about Digital Payments?

Debit card and mobile payments will remain exact and unaffected.

If you have questions, contact your local branch.
